Practical DFW graduation catering ideas for backyard and outdoor parties, from package choice to timing, sides, drinks and dessert.
When families ask me for DFW graduation catering ideas, they usually have the same problem. The guest list keeps changing, people will drift in and out over an afternoon, and the graduate wants a party that feels relaxed instead of formal. A burger cookout fits that kind of day well. In this guide I will walk through how I would plan the food for a graduation party, which of our packages fits which kind of celebration, and what to have ready before you request a quote.
Start with the shape of the party
Graduation parties tend to fall into two patterns. Some are open houses, where guests stop by for an hour, congratulate the graduate and move on to the next party. Others are a set gathering, where most guests arrive near the same time and eat together. The food plan is different for each. An open house needs food that stays fresh across the serving window. A set gathering needs a line that moves when everyone gets hungry at once.
On-site grilling handles both. Burgers come off the grill through the service window, so a guest who arrives late gets the same fresh plate as the first person through the line. Our packages include two hours of service. If your open house runs longer than that, decide when the meal belongs in the afternoon, or ask about additional service time when you request your quote.
Outdoor graduation party food that works
Outdoor graduation party food should be easy to hold, easy to serve and familiar to a wide range of ages. Grandparents, classmates, teachers and neighbors may all be at the same party. A burger with a full condiment line lets every guest build the plate they like without you guessing at a dozen preferences in advance.
Keep the menu simple and complete
A focused menu is easier to plan than a long buffet of small dishes. Pick the package, choose your sides if the package includes them, and decide whether you want drinks and dessert handled by us. That gives you a complete meal without a dozen separate decisions in the weeks before the ceremony.
Plan for different appetites
Teenagers and adults do not always eat the same way. Rather than relying on a formula, give us your best estimate of attendance and mention if many guests are students. The Block Party includes grilled chicken and a veggie burger as protein choices, which helps when your guest list includes people who do not want beef.
Graduation party catering in Dallas and nearby cities
For graduation party catering in Dallas, or in nearby cities such as Frisco, Plano, McKinney and Allen, the details that matter most are your address and the outdoor space you have. Tell us where the grill could sit, how guests will reach the buffet and whether there are gates or steps along the way. You can find burger catering in Dallas and every other city we cover on our service areas page. Our service area covers 50 miles from Arlington.
Timing around the ceremony
Many graduation parties happen the same weekend as the ceremony, which is often the busiest time for families and caterers alike. Reserve your date early, then confirm your guest count closer to the event. Share the serving window you want so the crew can set up before guests arrive.
Current burger packages and shared inclusions
The Cookout and The Block Party
The Cookout is $13 per person for a hamburger or cheeseburger with chips. The Block Party is $16 per person and includes everything in The Cookout plus your choice of two sides: Potato Salad, Baked Pork BBQ Beans, Creamy Coleslaw, Macaroni Salad, Fresh Fruit Salad, Seasoned Vegetables. Choose the combination that fits the meal you want, rather than assuming a larger menu is always necessary.
Gourmet Burger Bar
Gourmet Burger Bar is $19 per person. Includes: Sweet sourdough bun, Swiss & pepper jack cheese, sautéed mushrooms & jalapeños, grilled pineapple, bacon, guacamole, and homemade sauces, plus chips and your choice of two sides. All three packages use the same condiment line: Served with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, mustard, mayo, ketchup, salt, and pepper. Compare the three catering packages before making your selections. The Gourmet option uses the same $500 food and beverage minimum and shared add-on list.
The global package terms are the same for all three: $500 Food & Beverage Minimum | 20% service charge | 8.25% sales tax | 2-hour service | Professional on-site grilling and setup. Service charge and sales tax are added on top of the base package price. The Block Party includes a veggie burger option, and other vegetarian and dietary needs can be accommodated on request.
Which package fits a graduation party?
The Cookout is a good choice for a casual open house where guests grab a burger and chips between conversations. The Block Party gives a fuller plate with two sides and more protein choices, which suits a sit-down gathering. Gourmet Burger Bar fits a celebration where you want the food itself to feel like part of the event, with premium toppings and the same choice of sides. Compare all three in our catering packages.
Shared add-ons and What's Included
The same optional add-ons apply to every package: Hot Dogs +$3.00 per person; Bratwurst +$4.00 per person; Bottled Water & Assorted Sodas +$3.00 per person; Lemonade and Sweet Tea available for an additional +$1.00 per person; Dessert: Homemade Banana Pudding or Strawberry Shortcake +$4.00 per person. The lemonade and sweet tea option is an additional upgrade to the drinks selection, not a replacement price for bottled water and sodas. Keep your selected extras visible when requesting an estimate.
What's Included applies to all three packages: Tent, Grill, Lights, Buffet tables, Plates, Utensils, Setup, Teardown, Cleanup. Review this list alongside your site arrangements so included catering equipment is not confused with separate guest seating or other event supplies. Setup, teardown and cleanup are included, and the cooking and serving layout should be discussed for your actual location.
Booking and cancellation terms
A 25% non-refundable booking fee (deposit) is required to reserve your date. The remaining balance is due 7 days before the event. Cancel more than 7 days before the event and we refund the remaining 75% (the 25% booking fee is non-refundable). Cancellations within 7 days of the event are not eligible for a refund, but the full amount paid can be applied to a future event date.
Read the Booking & Cancellation Terms before reserving your date. When you are ready, use the quote form to send the date, actual event address, estimated attendance, preferred package, add-ons and meal window. Those details let us discuss a quote for your gathering instead of relying on a generic planning example.
